25 Years of History

Northern California Fertility Medical Center

Northern California Fertility Medical Center opened its doors on Sept 28, 1992 when a Reproductive Endocrinologist, Carlos E. Soto-Albors M.D, embarked on a mission to provide the Greater Sacramento Region, as well as the Northern California area, specialized care by establishing a Medical Center dedicated to assist families and individuals desiring to build a family.

And thus, the construction of a state of the art In-Vitro Fertilization Center, with all the necessary laboratories, surgery center, medical and office space was commenced in Roseville, California.

This a story of courage, perseverance and desire to create an environment of excellence in the field of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Reproductive Endocrinology, with an emphasis on compassion.

When you start such a complex Center, due to all the sophisticated equipment, and requirements that go into the field of taking care of precious human embryos, there are many roadblocks and hurdles to overcome, but like anything that is worth fighting for, there is always a team of skilled hard working individuals that are right behind you, for no one can do all of the above by himself/herself.

A highly trained specialized team of physicians, laboratory scientists (embryologists), nurses, surgical assistants, medical assistants as well as a dedicated administrative staff, is paramount to the able to perform the “magic” that is IVF.   history of ncfmc

The Center became the first IVF Center in Placer County and made the front page of the Roseville Press Tribune on Sept 26, 1993.

Shortly thereafter several Sacramento television stations covered the announcement of the first IVF baby born from NCFMC, with an interview of the proud parents and the proud medical staff.

That same year the Center received the prestigious recognition of becoming a certified IVF center by the newly formed national Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART).

SART is the primary organization of professionals dedicated to the practice of IVF, or assisted reproductive technology (ART). The organization represents the majority of, more than 90%, ART clinics in the country. The mission of SART is to establish and maintain standards for ART so that patients receive the highest possible level of care.  SART clinics meet the highest standards for quality, safety and patient care.

NCFMC has been a SART certified IVF center continuously from 1994 to the present. It is also certified by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and many other prestigious accrediting agencies.

The College of American Pathologists (CAP’s) Laboratory Accreditation Program accredits the entire spectrum of laboratory test disciplines with the most scientifically rigorous customized checklist requirements.

The CAP’s peer-based inspector model provides a unique balance of regulatory and educational coaching supported by the most respected worldwide pathology organization.

The Laboratory Accreditation Program inspects a variety of laboratory settings from complex university medical centers to physician office laboratories, and covers a complete array of disciplines and testing procedures.

The Largest Fertility Center in the Central Valley

Just five years later, the Center became the largest IVF Center in not only the Sacramento region but in all the Central Valley of California.

As the Center grew, other excellent and nationally recognized physicians, all Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologists, joined its Medical Staff.

Besides its founder, Dr. Carlos E. Soto-Albors M.D., the Medical Staff has consisted of Dr. Janice Andreyko M.D., Dr. Michael Murray M.D., Dr. Laurie Lovely M.D., Dr. Sahar Stephens M.D., Dr. Manuel Doblado, M.D., and others who have retired. Dr. John Gould, M.D., Ph.D. joined the practice early on as the Sacramento region’s only board certified urologist that specializes solely in male infertility.

The NCFMC physicians have worked tirelessly to continue the tradition of excellent success rates and treating each patient in a very personalized manner with respect and compassion.

Statewide, National and International

Because of NCFMC’s work and success, there have been more than 6,000 babies born and many happy families created. This number continues to grow every month. We still receive updates from our patients, which now includes NCFMC IVF “babies” that have graduated from college and married.

Our patients are not only from Northern California, which reaches from the San Francisco Bay Area on the west side of the valley to Lake Tahoe on the east side, down to Fresno on the south to Eureka and Yreka up north. NCFMC has seen patients from all over the United States and from overseas countries such as Italy, France, Corsica, England, Spain, Greece, Australia, Japan, China, Taiwan , Hong Kong, and the Philippines have initiated their pregnancies at our Center in Roseville, California.

Location

Initially, NCFMC was located at 406 Sunrise Blvd, starting with a 6,000 square feet facility, which occupied what used to be the administrative offices of the Roseville Hospital, on the third floor above what was the Roseville Hospital Surgery Center at that time. Originally, there were only 6 employees and one physician as the Center commenced its operations.

In 2005, The Center moved to its current location at 1130 Conroy Lane, to a state of the art, 12,500 square feet facility that houses the IVF laboratory, a certified Ambulatory Surgery Center, andrology and endocrinology laboratories, the medical offices and administrative staff. There is also a satellite clinic located in Sacramento where new patients can be seen. The Center at the moment has grown to approximately 49 employees.

Our Dedicated Staff

But the success of this Center would have not been possible without the dedicated staff that have been instrumental throughout our 25 years, and who have worked with the same love and dedication to make this happen. We would like to thank all those that from the very first day to the present, have contributed to our success.

Without the embryologists, all the way from 1993 until present, who work daily, 365 days a year, to ensure that all aspects of IVF from oocyte capture, fertilization, embryo culture, embryo transfer, cryopreservation, and embryo biopsies to detect genetic disorders or checking for chromosomal abnormalities, among many other tasks, none of this would have been possible.

The same is true for the dedicated nurses, laboratory scientists, nurse anesthetists, surgical techs, medical assistants, and administrative staff that comprise the Team, as they work on a 7 day schedule year round. We honor them and thank them profusely.

We also would like to thank all of the patients who have trusted us for their care, for these twenty-five years. We also thank our many happy families for the cards and photos of their babies they send us, for the compliments toward our staff, the comments on Facebook and other social media, and especially for bringing their babies to meet us. One of the most rewarding aspects of our job is to see the fruits of our labor, which is the miraculous transformation of one egg plus one sperm making a healthy baby. Getting to visit with them always brings us happiness and a smile.

Our mission will continue for the next twenty five, as we continue and strive harder to improve on a daily basis.

Thank you all for being part of this journey.

Carlos E. Soto-Albors, M.D.

Founder of NCFMC, September 28, 1992. Retired June 30, 2017.
