What is Fertility Evaluation? Why It’s the First Step to Treatment

Infertility is a challenge faced by many individuals and couples trying to build their families naturally. Infertility can also be experienced by same-sex couples trying to use their own sperm or eggs for fertility treatments. Fertility evaluations enable these families to find out the cause of their fertility challenges. Additionally, fertility experts are able to assist these families to explore options for treatment so that they can realize their family building goals. Ideally, when infertility is diagnosed early, families are able to move forward with treatments, or alternative family building options. So let us talk about why this is the first step to treating infertility.

Why Do You Need a Fertility Evaluation?

A fertility evaluation is necessary in determining why people are unable to have children naturally, if it is not based on the nature of their relationship. Typically people can become pregnant between six months and a year if they have been having unprotected sex regularly. A woman’s menstrual cycle and ovarian reserve are central to her reproductivity, while for men, sperm health and function is central to fertilizing eggs. Fertility evaluations are conducted following an evaluation of other factors such as health, medical history, lifestyle, diet and age. These aspects combined with the results of any fertility tests can assist doctors to accurately diagnose and treat infertility.

Who Should Get a Fertility Evaluation?

Anyone who is facing challenges in family building should get a fertility evaluation. In particular, women who have not yet begun building their family, but would like to and are 35 years old and above. Men who are aged 40 and above can also benefit from fertility evaluation if they still desire to build their families. Couples who have experienced the loss of pregnancies repeatedly could also benefit from fertility evaluation to determine what the cause of the miscarriages is.

What Are the Different Types of Fertility Tests?

Fertility evaluations are conducted using several types of fertility tests that accurately diagnose any issues that could be preventing people from building. Below are some key tests done during a fertility evaluation:

Hormone testing

Hormonal testing is done using a blood sample because when hormones are released from their respective glands, they are carried along in the bloodstream. In men, testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, among others are measured. Women release estrogen, progesterone, luteinizing hormone, anti-Mullerin hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, among others.

Semen analysis

Without sperm, fertilization cannot take place and if there are any issues affecting the sperm, they could lead to challenges in infertility. Semen analyses evaluate the volume and viscosity of the semen itself, the amount, movement and structure of sperm, as well the health of the  chromosomes and any white blood cells within the semen.

Ultrasound and HSG

An ultrasound gives a visual of the structure of the reproductive organs, for both men and women. A hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an x-ray of the fallopian tubes used to determine if they have any blockage which could be preventing the sperm from reaching the egg. Typically this is done using a liquid contrast agent to highlight the inside of the uterus. If there is any pooling when the liquid reaches the fallopian tubes, it is indicative of blockage, which can be treated.

Conclusion

Fertility evaluations comprise a series of fertility tests used to diagnose the causes of infertility and help fertility experts to treat patients, based on the results of the evaluation. If a person has been trying to become pregnant for a time without success, having a fertility evaluation is vital in assisting them to find out what issues could be preventing pregnancy.
